Be Alert to scams making the rounds

There are many scams doing their rounds daily and Overstrand Municipality once again urges residents to remain alert to scams and report suspicious activities to the police and relevant authorities.

During the last few months, residents across the Overstrand have received fraudulent WhatsApp messages from a scammer, demanding immediate payment of the municipal account to avoid disconnection of power because their bill is in arrears.

The latest are using the phone number 067 531 2390, with a profile pic of people sitting around a table.

The Municipality will not send you a WhatsApp message regarding accounts.

It is of critical importance that our ratepayers take note of the procedure for disconnection of services:

  1. The client will receive a sms if there is a cellphone number on system informing them of arrears and 2 days to make payment.
  2. If payment is not made within the two days, client will receive a 14 day notice to make payment, notice will be delivered and emailed if there is an email address on system.
  3. If payment is not made within the 14 days then services will be restricted/disconnected.
